ポテンシャル ［potential＜ラテン語 potens（能力のある）］

［1］ 「可能な，潜在する」の意味で複合語をつくる．
［2］ 【理】 １単位の質量や電荷を基準の位置から一定地点まで動かすのに必要な仕事として定義される量．位置の関数として表される．重力ポテンシャル，電位ポテンシャル，弾性ポテンシャルなどがある．

【理】 位置エネルギー．物体位置または物体相互の位置関係によって蓄えられたエネルギー．単にポテンシャルとも．
